Flagstaff Pulliam Airport (FLG) — Flying Direct

Flagstaff's Pulliam Airport (IATA: FLG) is a small regional airport located 4 miles south of downtown, just off I-17 at Exit 333. American Airlines operates the only scheduled commercial service: daily flights to and from Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) — a 40-minute hop — and seasonal service to Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW). Flight frequency is limited; typically 2–3 departures daily to PHX.

The advantage of flying FLG: you arrive in Flagstaff directly rather than dealing with the Phoenix connection logistics. The disadvantage: fares on FLG routes often carry a small-market premium of $50–$150 over what you'd pay for a Phoenix roundtrip on competitive routes. For travelers already routing through PHX, flying into FLG adds a second connection and rarely saves meaningful time versus taking the Groome shuttle directly.

Getting from FLG to Downtown

FLG is 4 miles south of downtown — a 10-minute drive. Rideshare options:

• Uber / Lyft: Available, typically $12–$18 to downtown hotels. Wait times 5–15 minutes depending on time of day.
• Taxi: Airport taxi stand serves departing flights; expect ~$25–$30 to downtown. Fixed rate, no surge pricing.
• Rental car: Avis, Budget, and National operate desks at FLG. Rates comparable to downtown pickup.
• City bus: Mountain Line Route 4 stops near the airport area but does not serve the terminal directly — not a practical option with luggage.

Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) — The Primary Arrival Point

Most visitors to Flagstaff fly into Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX), which has the broadest service from nearly every major US city. PHX is 145 miles south of Flagstaff — a 2.5-hour drive north on I-17, one of Arizona's most dramatically scenic interstates as it climbs from desert floor at 1,100 feet to the Colorado Plateau at 7,000 feet.

From PHX you have four realistic transport options:

The Groome shuttle is the best option for travelers without a car. The price is competitive, the schedule is reliable, and the downtown dropoff eliminates the last-mile problem. On busy travel days (holiday Fridays, summer weekends) the shuttle can arrive 15–30 minutes late due to traffic leaving Phoenix.

Option 2: Rental Car

PHX has one of the most competitive rental car markets in the US — the consolidated Rental Car Center (accessible via PHX Sky Train from any terminal) has 12+ companies competing. Standard economy vehicles run $35–$55/day off-peak; $60–$80/day in summer peak. Add taxes and fees and budget $55–$100/day all-in.

The drive north on I-17 is entirely freeway, well-marked, and scenic. From the PHX terminals to Flagstaff downtown runs about 2 hours 15 minutes in light traffic; 2 hours 45 minutes in heavy traffic (Friday afternoons leaving Phoenix are the worst). The climb from the Valley to the Rim — passing through Sunset Point rest area around mile 252 — is dramatic. Speed limit is 75 mph; respect the grade on the descent southbound.
