Two Very Different Shopping Districts
Glendale actually has two distinct shopping identities, and mixing them up is the most common planning mistake. Historic Downtown Glendale and Catlin Court, several miles south, are built around antique dealers, independent boutiques, and a walkable historic streetscape; we cover that scene in full in our historic downtown guide. This guide instead covers the other Glendale: Arrowhead Towne Center and the mainstream retail corridor around it in the northern part of the city.
Knowing which one you actually want before you drive saves a wasted trip. If you're picturing chain stores, a food court, and a parking structure, you want Arrowhead. If you're picturing browsing antique booths on a tree-lined street, you want Catlin Court instead.
Arrowhead Towne Center
Arrowhead Towne Center is Glendale's main enclosed shopping mall, anchored by a mix of department and big-box stores along with a standard mall lineup of national chains. Like most enclosed malls, its exact tenant list shifts over time as stores open and close, so search for current Arrowhead Towne Center store listings before you go if you're chasing a specific retailer. Hours generally follow standard mall patterns but can vary by season and by individual store, so check current hours rather than assuming.
The mall sits in the northern part of Glendale, a meaningful drive from both the stadium district and historic downtown, so it's worth treating as its own stop on your itinerary rather than something you'll stumble into on the way to a game.
Big-Box and Off-Mall Retail Nearby
The area around Arrowhead has grown up with the mall, and you'll find a fairly standard cluster of big-box retailers, home and outdoor stores, and chain restaurants in the surrounding shopping centers. This is practical, everyday-errand shopping more than a destination retail experience, useful if you need supplies, gear, or a specific chain store during a longer stay rather than a highlight of your trip.
Grocery and Everyday Shopping
If you're staying in Glendale for more than a couple of days, especially with a kitchen or kitchenette, you'll find standard grocery chains scattered across the city rather than concentrated in one spot. The West Valley isn't underserved for basics; you're generally never far from a grocery store, pharmacy, or general retailer regardless of where in Glendale you're staying.
Seasonal and Holiday Shopping
Glendale leans into the holiday season harder than most West Valley cities, largely thanks to Glendale Glitters, the historic downtown's holiday lights display that draws shoppers downtown in the evenings during that stretch. If your trip lines up with the holiday season, historic downtown's shops tend to extend hours and lean into the seasonal crowd, while Arrowhead runs its own standard holiday retail push. Check current seasonal hours for either district before you go, since they shift year to year.
Getting to the Shopping Districts
Arrowhead Towne Center and historic downtown Glendale are not within easy walking distance of each other, so plan on driving or a rideshare between them rather than combining both into a single walkable outing. Neither district is directly walkable from Westgate or the stadium area either. See our getting around Glendale guide for the fuller picture on how the city's districts connect.
Where Shopping Fits Into a Trip
For most visitors, shopping is a supporting activity around a sports, event, or day-trip-focused Glendale visit rather than the reason for the trip itself. If historic Catlin Court's antique and boutique scene is more your speed than a mall, prioritize that district and treat Arrowhead as optional. Either way, pair a shopping stop with a meal from our Glendale restaurant guide and check the Glendale events calendar in case something else is worth building the day around.
