Stop in Cottonwood First
Before climbing AZ-89A to Jerome, the Cottonwood area has over six wine tasting rooms concentrated in Old Town and along the Verde Valley Wine Trail. This is one of Arizona's most serious wine regions — estate-grown, altitude-influenced, genuinely interesting.
Stopping here before the Jerome climb is the right sequencing: you arrive in the valley with time and energy, taste a couple of wines, then drive up to Jerome for the evening. The wine trail is a harder sell after a full day in Jerome when you just want dinner.

Old Town Cottonwood. One of the most respected producers in the Verde Valley. Focuses on Rhone varietals grown at elevation. Good introductory flight to the region.
Page Springs Cellars
About 8 miles south of Cottonwood on Page Springs Road. The anchor winery of the Verde Valley wine scene, estate-grown, widely considered Arizona's best. Worth the short detour.
Day Trip Reality Check
The Math on a Tucson Day Trip
3 hours there + 3 hours back = 6 hours of driving for a day trip. That leaves 4–5 hours on-site before you need to start the return drive to avoid arriving home past midnight. It's doable, but it's a lot of car time for what you get. At least one overnight is the better play.
The overnight case from Tucson is strong. Jerome has only ~50 rooms total across five properties, so the town stays intimate even when full. Staying overnight means you get the evening after day-trippers leave (Spirit Room, dinner at The Asylum), the morning when galleries open before tour buses arrive, and you can do the Cottonwood wine trail on arrival without rushing.
Where to Stay in Jerome
Jerome Grand Hotel
The restored 1926 United Verde Hospital — the same building that appears on every Jerome ghost tour. Perched at the top of town with panoramic Verde Valley views from the terrace. The Asylum restaurant is the best dinner in Jerome. Books out months ahead on fall weekends.
Connor Hotel
Right on Main Street with the Spirit Room bar directly downstairs. The liveliest option — you're in the middle of everything. Rooms are smaller and more modest than the Grand, but the location and access to Jerome's most famous bar are unmatched.
