Day 1: Arrival and Old Town
Plan on roughly 20 to 30 minutes from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to Old Town, or 30 to 40 minutes if your hotel is in the North Scottsdale resort corridor. After checking in, spend the afternoon walking Old Town's Western-heritage storefronts and the district's contemporary galleries -- if your trip lands on a Thursday, the Scottsdale ArtWalk turns the evening into a natural next step.
Close the day with dinner in Old Town, where the same blocks that hold the galleries and storefronts also hold the city's densest concentration of restaurants and rooftop bars. See our Old Town Scottsdale guide for a fuller breakdown of the district's two sides.
Day 2: Resort Day -- Golf, Spa, or Pool
Day 2 is built around the resort itself rather than sightseeing. If golf is part of the trip, book a tee time at TPC Scottsdale or one of the area's many other resort and public courses well in advance, especially during peak season. If golf isn't the point, a spa treatment or a full day at the pool covers the same slot -- several Scottsdale resorts run destination-spa programs that stand on their own as a reason to book.
Either version of this day works: the goal is to actually use the resort you're paying the premium for, rather than treating it purely as a place to sleep between outings.
Day 3: McDowell Sonoran Preserve and Shopping
Start the morning with a trail in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve while temperatures are cooler, choosing a route that matches your fitness level and checking current trail conditions before you go. In the afternoon, shift to Scottsdale Fashion Square, home to Arizona's largest collection of luxury and exclusive-brand stores, which sits close enough to Old Town to pair with a final dinner there before departure.
This day works as written in cooler months; in summer, move the trail earlier and treat the afternoon as an indoor, air-conditioned block regardless of whether shopping is the plan.
Adjusting the Itinerary by Season
This plan is written for the comfortable stretch roughly October through April, when outdoor time in the morning or evening works without much adjustment. In summer, roughly May through September, shift the Day 3 trail and any Day 2 golf to early morning, and treat afternoons as pool, spa, or shaded shopping time instead.
If your dates land during WM Phoenix Open week in early February, expect higher resort rates and more crowds citywide -- see our best time to visit Scottsdale guide for the full seasonal breakdown before you lock in dates.
Extending the Trip Beyond Scottsdale
Three days covers the core of Scottsdale itself, but the city also functions as one leg of a longer Arizona trip. Phoenix sits immediately southwest and adds desert hiking, downtown museums, and Sky Harbor access without much extra driving. Sedona's red rock country is roughly a two-hour drive north for travelers with an extra day or two.
See our things to do in Scottsdale guide for additional activities to swap into any of these three days if your interests run differently than this default plan.
