The Route

The Verde Canyon Railroad departs from the historic Clarkdale depot (300 N Broadway, Clarkdale, AZ) — a 45-minute drive from Sedona via AZ-89A west through Cottonwood. The train travels 20 miles each way through the Verde Canyon wilderness: terrain that has no road access. The canyon is enclosed by basalt cliffs and cottonwood forest along the Verde River, with the Sycamore Canyon Wilderness rising on the north wall.

The train stops at Perkinsville (an historic cattle ranch site) for 20 minutes before returning. Total trip time is 4 hours including the stop. The narration covers the canyon's geology, wildlife, and railroad history — the line was originally built in 1911 to serve Jerome copper mines and was the economic lifeline of the Verde Valley until the mines closed in 1953.

Bald Eagle Nesting Season: March–May

The Verde River corridor supports 30–40 bald eagle nesting pairs during the spring nesting season — one of the highest concentrations in the American Southwest. The canyon geography creates ideal nesting habitat: vertical basalt cliffs for nest placement, the Verde River for fish, and thermal updrafts for soaring. March and April are the peak weeks, when adult eagles are actively feeding nestlings and making constant food runs from the river.

The railroad staff are trained wildlife spotters. The train slows at eagle nest locations and the narrators point out birds — you are unlikely to miss the eagles if they are present. Average sighting count in March: 10–15 bald eagles per trip. The open-air gondola car provides unobstructed viewing and is the best position for wildlife watching. Bring binoculars.

Outside eagle season, the canyon still has excellent wildlife: great blue herons along the river, javelinas on the canyon floor, great horned owls in the cliff faces, and periodic mountain lion sightings (from a distance). The spring wildflower bloom along the canyon floor (March–April) adds color to the canyon floor landscape.

Saturday departures during eagle season (March–May) sell out 4 weeks in advance — this is not exaggerated. Weekday departures are significantly easier to book and often available 1–2 weeks out.

The train typically departs at 10 AM (check current schedule). Add the Verde Valley wine trail to the afternoon after the train returns around 2 PM — the Old Town Cottonwood tasting rooms are 10 minutes from Clarkdale and open until 6–7 PM. Or combine with a Jerome visit (10 minutes from Clarkdale via AZ-89A) before the train departs.
