All four vortex sites are within Coconino National Forest, where staying on established trails is not a preference but a condition of the land's ecological health. This applies specifically to the area around the Kachina Woman spire at Boynton Canyon, where the trail system has been carefully designed to keep visitors away from the most sensitive soil surfaces. Do not go off-trail.
Cairns and spiritual objects: The Coconino National Forest and Leave No Trace standards both prohibit adding to, building, or rebuilding unofficial cairns. The vortex sites — particularly Airport Mesa and Bell Rock — have a history of informal cairn-building by visitors marking the vortex spot. The Forest Service removes these cairns regularly because they mislead other hikers about the trail. Do not build or rebuild cairns.
