- Charged phone + car charger — the tour uses GPS continuously. Bring a charging cable.
- Water — at least 1 liter per person. The rim is at 7,000 feet with low humidity.
- Layers — rim temperatures can be 20+ degrees cooler than Phoenix. Mornings are chilly even in summer.
- Sun protection — hat, sunglasses, sunscreen. High altitude = stronger UV.
- Snacks/lunch — food inside the park is limited and expensive. Pack a cooler.
- $35 park entrance fee — per vehicle, valid 7 days. Buy online at recreation.gov to skip the gate line.
Best Time to Go
Spring (March-May) and Fall (September-November) offer the best balance of weather, crowds, and light. Summer is hottest and most crowded — arrive before 9 AM. Winter is magical with occasional snow on the rim, but check road conditions first.
