~57 mi
Flagstaff to Jerome
~1 hr
via AZ-89A/Prescott
Day Trip
very easy from Flagstaff
Weekdays
best for fewer crowds
"57 miles, about 1 hour. Take AZ-89A south through Prescott — it's slower than I-17 but exponentially more scenic. The switchback descent into Jerome from AZ-89A is one of the best arrival moments in Arizona. Do this trip on a weekday if possible."
Route Options
Option A — Via Prescott (Scenic)
AZ-89A south from Flagstaff → through Prescott → AZ-89A north → Jerome
- ∼ 57 miles, ~1 hour
- Passes through ponderosa pine to high desert
- Prescott stop option (Whiskey Row, Courthouse Plaza)
- Arrives Jerome via the switchback approach
- One of Arizona's most varied short drives
Option B — Via I-17/Cottonwood
I-17 south → Exit 287 (AZ-260 west) → Cottonwood → AZ-89A north → Jerome
- ∼ 55 miles, ~50 minutes
- About 10 min faster overall
- Passes through Verde Valley wine country
- Misses Prescott entirely
- Good choice on the return trip for variety
Best strategy: Take the Prescott route going in for the best arrival experience — you crest a hill and Jerome comes into view on the opposite hillside, perched dramatically at 5,000 feet. Return via Cottonwood for Verde Valley wine country variety on the way back.
The AZ-89A Arrival
The drive from Flagstaff to Jerome compresses an extraordinary amount of Arizona into one hour. You leave Flagstaff's ponderosa pine forest at 7,000 feet, descend through the chaparral hills around Prescott at 5,400 feet, and then the Verde Valley opens below you. From the Prescott area on AZ-89A heading north toward Jerome, you'll see the Verde Valley spread out across the floor below and Jerome clinging to the far hillside — a cluster of rooftops and Victorian facades stacked improbably on the side of Cleopatra Hill.
The final approach on AZ-89A is the switchback climb. Three miles of tight curves ascending 1,000 feet. On most days the road is straightforward; on weekends it's a slow-moving parade. Plan to arrive before 10 AM or after 3 PM if you're driving on a Saturday or Sunday.

Day Trip vs Overnight from Flagstaff
At only 1 hour each way, Jerome is one of the easiest day trips from Flagstaff. The round trip driving time is just 2 hours, leaving a full day for Jerome and the Verde Valley. Day trip is the obvious default.
The overnight case from Flagstaff is specifically compelling if you want to do the Verde Valley wine trail (Page Springs Cellars, Pillsbury Wine Company) plus a ghost tour on the same evening. The wine trail consumes 3–4 hours on its own; adding an 8 PM ghost tour means you'd be driving back to Flagstaff at 11 PM. One night at Jerome changes that calculus entirely.
When to stay overnight
- ✓ You want to do the Verde Valley wine trail (Page Springs, Pillsbury)
- ✓ You want a ghost tour (runs 8–10 PM)
- ✓ You want to experience the Spirit Room after the day-trippers leave
- ✓ You want morning galleries before the tour buses arrive
Parking in Jerome
Jerome's parking is the #1 frustration for first-time visitors — the Main Street lot fills by 10:30 AM on weekends from April through October. The best strategy is to arrive before 9:30 AM or use the Jerome State Historic Park lot and AZ-89A switchback pulloffs.
